The Invisible String: A Heartwarming Story and a Valentine’s Day Craft

Within the pages of “The Invisible String,” written by Patrice Karst, lies a tale spun of love, connection, and an invisible string. This wondrous work serves as a beacon of hope for young children (ages 4-7) who may experience anxiety or pain of loss while also serving as a reminder that amidst this great, big world, we are all connected by love’s infinite threads. As Valentine’s Day approaches, this story stands as a testament to the enduring power of love, a reminder to cherish and nurture it daily. And now, with the aid of this beautiful mobile heart craft, this message can live on, floating in the air to remind us that love is always near, even if we can’t see the strings.

To construct a heart mobile with invisible strings, you will need the following:

SUPPLIES

  • Colored Construction Paper
  • Heart Shapes/Cookie Cutters to Trace
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Fishing Line
  • Large Stick, Wooden Dowel, or Hanger
  • Various Decorative Materials:  Tissue Paper, Stickers, Crayons, Markers, Paint
  • Twine

DIRECTIONS

  1. Begin by finding a large stick on a nature walk, a wooden dowel, or a hanger.
  2. Cut a piece of twine 2 feet long and tie each end of the stick/dowel to use as a hanger for the mobile. (see photo below)
  3. Cut 2-3 pieces of fishing line, each about 12-18 inches long, and attach them by tying the lines to the stick, dowel, or hanger and have them hang down at various lengths.
  4. Cut out two hearts the same size from colored construction paper and decorate both front and back. Old magazines or recycled paper could also be used. Hearts may be personalized with a particular person or pet name.
  5. Place glue on each undecorated side and match up on the fishing line as if they are floating in the air on the string at varying heights.
  6. Hang in a window, over a desk, or in a special spot where the invisible string connecting hearts can be seen.

This activity is a perfect way to support young ones with separation anxiety, but it’s also an ideal story to share with all young children this Valentine’s Day. It will remind everyone of the special people they hold dear and who treasure them, regardless of distance or circumstances. ❤️
