Crafting Memories: Celebrate Father’s Day with Heartfelt Handprints!

Father’s Day is just around the corner, and what better way to celebrate the special Dads, Papas, Grandpas, and Dog Dads in our lives than with a heartfelt, handmade gift?

In this blog post, we’ll share an inexpensive and last-minute Father’s Day craft idea that children or pets can participate in. Using a free printable sheet and colorful creativity, you can create a memorable keepsake that Dad will cherish forever. So, gather your supplies, and let’s get started!

Materials Needed:

  • Free printable handprint sheets
  • Non-toxic paint, markers, colored pencils, or Crayons in various colors
  • White paper or cardstock
  • Paintbrushes (for handprints)
  • Frames (8×10 for Dad, Papa, Grandpa, or My Hero; 5×7 for Dog Dad)
  • Optional: Decorative items for the frames (ribbons, stickers, etc.)

Creating the Handprint Craft:

Download and print the desired handprint sheet(s) for Dad, Papa, Grandpa, Dog Dad, or My Hero.

  • Prepare the painting area by covering it with newspaper or a plastic tablecloth to prevent mess.
  • If using paint, pour small amounts of different colors onto a palette or paper plates. Ensure the paint is non-toxic and safe for children and animals. Alternatively, if using markers or Crayons, set them aside for later use.
  • Encourage the children or pets to dip their hands or paws into the paint and then carefully place their prints on the white paper or cardstock. Be sure to have their hands or paws facing down. (Hence the “hands down” pun!) You could also apply the paint to their hands or paws with a paintbrush. If your child prefers not to get messy, you can trace their hands instead.
  • Allow the handprints to dry completely before moving on to the next step.
  • Color the rest of the printable sheet with pencils, markers, or crayons. Let the little ones showcase their artistic talents by adding their personal touch to the craft.
  • If desired, children can sign and date the sheet to add an extra sentimental touch.
  • Carefully insert the finished handprint into an appropriate-sized frame. (8×10 for Dad, Papa, Grandpa, or My Hero; 5×7 for Dog Dad) You can find inexpensive frames at dollar stores or opt for a fancier frame.
  • If you wish, decorate the frame with ribbons, stickers, or any other embellishments that Dad would love.

Present the framed handprint craft to Dad on Father’s Day, and watch as he cherishes this heartfelt gesture from the children or pets in his life.

Safe and Non-Toxic Options: For this craft, it’s essential to use safe materials for both children and animals. Here are a couple of options:

Homemade Non-Toxic Paint:

You can create your own non-toxic paint by mixing equal parts of flour, salt, and water until you achieve a smooth consistency. Divide the mixture into small containers and add food coloring to create different colors. Add little bits of water at a time after adding the colors to get a smoother consistency. This homemade paint is safe for children and pets if accidentally ingested.

Store-Bought Non-Toxic Paint:

Many art supply stores offer non-toxic, washable paints specifically designed for children. Look for water-based paints labeled as “non-toxic” or “safe for children.” These paints are easy to clean up and pose minimal risks to children and pets.

With just a few simple materials and a lot of love, you can create a heartfelt and inexpensive Father’s Day gift that the father figures in your life will treasure forever! Download your free template below:
