How to create delightful Easter decorations without breaking the eggs…or the bank!

With Easter just around the corner, decorating plastic eggs is a fun (and inexpensive!) way to get into the festive spirit with your family. Whether you’re looking for a fun DIY project with your kids or just want to spruce up your Easter decorations, there are countless ways to adorn your plastic Easter eggs with materials you already have at home.

No trip to the store is necessary! Simply give your children their lunch bags and have them gather materials they would like to use around the house.

Here are some of my favorite tips for decorating plastic Easter eggs using various materials:

Glitter – Add some pizazz to your eggs by covering them in glitter. Simply apply some glue to the egg and sprinkle glitter until it’s completely covered. Any white craft glue will work for decorating plastic eggs, like Mod Podge or Elmer’s Liquid School Glue. Want to create a golden egg? Use a mix of gold and white glitter to create a shimmery effect.

Buttons – In various shapes and sizes, buttons are an excellent choice for decorating plastic Easter eggs. Glue them onto the eggs in any pattern or design you like, or create a monogrammed egg using your initials.

Permanent Markers – Beyond symbolizing the beauty and renewal of the spring season, Easter eggs represent Jesus’ emergence from the tomb. This is a great time to discuss the true significance of Easter. Each person can write what Easter means to them on an egg.

Beads – Want to add texture and color to your plastic Easter eggs? Use beads in various sizes and colors to create intricate patterns and designs. You can also cover the egg in a single color for a more uniform look.

Tissue paper – Tissue paper is a versatile material that you can use in many ways to decorate plastic Easter eggs. Cut small pieces of tissue paper into various shapes and glue them onto the egg to create a mosaic effect.

Pom-poms – These are a fun and fluffy addition to any plastic Easter egg. For a cute cupcake-inspired egg, use tissue paper as the cup liner and glue pom-poms to the top to create a “frosting” effect.

Tin foil – It’s not just for use in the kitchen! Tin foil is an excellent choice for creating a metallic finish on your plastic Easter eggs. Simply cover the egg in tin foil and use Sharpies to draw designs or patterns onto the foil. Don’t use washable markers, as they will smear and smudge.

Sequins – These are an eye-catching addition to any plastic Easter egg. Glue them onto the egg in any pattern or design to create a shimmering effect.

Napkins – Whether leftover from a child’s birthday or of the everyday variety, napkins are great for decorating your plastic Easter eggs. Much like with the tissue paper, cut small pieces of a napkin into various shapes and glue them onto the egg, or glue a large part around it for a more uniform look.

Stickers – As a simple method for the youngest decorators, children can use stickers in various shapes and designs to create colorful and playful-looking eggs.

Flowers – Flowers are a lovely addition to any plastic Easter egg. Use small, artificial flowers and glue them onto the egg in any pattern or design you like, or create a flower crown effect by lining the top of the egg with flowers.

Cloth – Give leftover cloth new life by gluing your favorite designs onto the plastic eggs. Choose a single kind of cloth for a more uniform look, or cut cloth scraps with different patterns and glue them onto the egg to create a mosaic effect.

Pipe cleaners, construction paper, and yellow pom-poms – Use these materials to make a little yellow chick. Cut out wings and feet from construction paper and glue them onto the egg, then attach pipe cleaner legs and a pom-pom head to complete the look.

With these tips, you and your family can create a variety of unique and beautiful plastic Easter eggs that will brighten up your home and bring a smile to everyone’s face. So grab some supplies, use your imagination, and get creative!
